Gana means people, Pati means leader.
Thus Ganapati means leader of people. Any Hindu Religious function is commenced only with an invocation to Lord Ganesha. Vighnaharta is as the name indicates the remover of obstacle & is hence the first deity to be worshipped during any Hindu ritual, sacrifice or religious ceremony.
